Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary

Although we offer several restorative dental treatments at our office, there are some cases when the tooth cannot be saved, requiring a tooth extraction in Rolling Meadows. Here are a few examples:

  • A large cavity has left it beyond repair
  • The tooth is so broken that there isn’t anything to put back together
  • It won’t fall out naturally/is blocking an incoming adult tooth (baby teeth only)
  • Room needs to be created for a denture or orthodontic treatment
  • The tooth is impacted below the gumline

The Process of Removing a Tooth

The process of removing a tooth always begins the same way: numbing your mouth thoroughly. If the tooth in question has already broken through the gumline, then your dentist will grip the tooth, rock it loose, and remove it from the socket. If the tooth in question is trapped beneath the gumline, then we will need to intervene with a surgical extraction instead. This requires us to make a small incision in the gums before removing the tooth section by section (after thoroughly numbing the area, of course).

Should you or a loved one ever need an extraction, we’ll take every step to make sure you’re comfortable the entire time. Thanks to Dr. Wang’s light touch, the procedure is usually over before a patient even realizes!

It’s very important that you dedicate the next several days exclusively to healing. More specifically, we recommend:

  • Taking prescribed or OTC pain medication as directed
  • Placing a cold compress against the outside of your cheek in 10-minute intervals
  • Eating only extremely soft foods, like applesauce and plain yogurt
  • Changing the gauze pads as needed
  • Keeping your head elevated, including while you sleep
  • Brushing and flossing carefully around the extraction site

If you have any questions for us following the procedure, including what you should eat or drink, don’t hesitate to give us a call. We also recommend getting in touch with us if your discomfort persists past the 5-day mark or you develop a fever, since that may be a sign of an infection.
